| Got Mood Swings? | | A reporter once asked the Mood Swings if they took themselves seriously. It was a fair question. It's unusual for five women over 40 to grab guitars and rock out to their own original music, singing about instructions, metrosexuals, trailer park living and more. Their music shifts with the mood of the band: airy love ballads swing into torchy done-me-wrong numbers, morph into mainstream pop, then make an abrupt left turn and barrel straight into hard rock; lyrics fluctuate between lush, lyrical poetry and syncopated, unexpected rhymes.
The answer is yes - they take the music seriously, but not themselves. Mood Swings are serious fun. Life is good, moods are many, and fans can let their hair loose, rock out, and put the top down for the ride. | Mary Guthrie guitar, vox | | Mary G. can’t get enough of: Mood Swings, chocolate, singing, playing rhythm guitar, blues, screamin’ rock n’ roll, dogs. Trophy husband, great kids. Chocolate. Cozy couch, naps, dancing. Writing. Funnies. If I’d known getting older would be this much fun I would’ve done it a lot sooner. Life is good. Come along with us! | Mary Hestand vox, guitar | | This Mary sings and writes songs when she is not busy having mood swings. Excuse me, I mean busy performing with Merry and the Mood Swings. Mary is a recovering performance artist and an avid, not to say compulsive, shoe shopper. OK, maybe just a little compulsive with the shoe shopping. | Diane Harris guitar, sax, flute, vox | | Powerhouse musician Diane plays lead guitar, flute and one heckuva wailin' sax. She's even been caught playing piano, drums, bass and other instruments when she thought no one was looking. A veteran performer, her alter ego teaches music at a private school in Dallas. | Carol Moxley bass | | The newest Mood Swing, Carol spends her time juggling life, laundry, faith and her bass guitar. Growing up with a mother who sang opera professionally and a father who played country music on the radio, it's no surprise Carol chose rock. A musician since age five, she joined her first band at age 14 and has lost count of the bands she's been in since. She prides herself in keeping a solid, bottom end! | Martha Germann drums | | When Martha ventured into the corporate world, she found there were days when she would come home with the need to hit something with a stick. Playing the drums seemed like a natural progression. Joining Merry and the Mood Swings gave Martha's urge to hit something new purpose and meaning, not to mention it's a heck of a lot of fun. And besides, being a drummer in a band increases her "cool" factor with her nephews. | | |
